Storm!

Crazy strong storm rolling through northern Nevada now and throughout the weekend. Rain all day down here, and all the way up the mountains. I just checked the cameras at Mount Rose ski resort and could only see it change to snow at the very summit. Damn.

My maple showing off!

We desperately need the water for some relief from this unrelenting drought. But after the horrible fires all over California and in our own backyard, there is a lot of concern about flooding and mudslides.

As I drove around town early in the day, I could already see a lot of streets and gutters backing up. The wind and rain brought down all our gorgeous fall leaves and there is just nowhere to go but down…

Well, I hope you are enjoying a wonderful and colorful fall–and stay safe, warm and dry where ever you are!

Garden Art

Garden Art is for all areas!

Ugggg, the unseasonal heat wave is kicking butt here! A hot studio makes it miserable to torch, so I have been working on my fused glass art. It is a lot easier to cut, design and prep pieces for the kiln to “cook” them over night while I am safely slumbering in my air conditioned house!

No surprise–fused glass garden art is a fun choice and perfect to enhance any garden or backyard — or even indoors! The shine of the glass, the rich colors that never fade–what’s not to like??

Here are some of my new Suncatchers–available in my Etsy shop and the Artists Co-op Gallery in Reno. New designs are ready for their close up (photography that is!) but it is so much more fun to make than take photos….. they’ll be coming soon though, I promise.

I hope you are enjoying your extra hot rays of sunny goodness–and a pretty piece or two of glass garden art! Smiles, Sheri

2021….. at last!

Ahhhh, 2021.

Thank you for finally getting here.

I think we can all agree 2020 has been a year best forgotten…. or at least agree it brought us all many more opportunities to show our humanity, compassion, kindness, humility, honor and understanding. Some people did that so much better than others.

Many inspired us to carry on, sharing unimaginable acts of love, kindness and dignity we should all hope to have when we desperately needed it.

Healthcare and frontline workers faced and continue to endure the brunt of the unknown with persistence and grace in spite of the willfully ignorant.

Delivery services were excoriated when the 2020 sharknado of events kept piling on the delays–pandemic shopping, snow storms, holiday shopping, the post office being DeJoyed…. (I’m still waiting for a Paul Stankard book from a Nov 23 order–sigh)

Some could only offer their petty and inherent smallness. Sadly, I can and do put almost all politicians in that group.

Conspiracy theorists just make me laugh. And worry for the gullible.

Fools selfishly claimed and continue to claim their Constitutional and religious rights are being violated — without ever considering their simple moral rights to be citizens of and for the world.

So what will it take to get through? How do we get through to the people who refuse to believe that short term adjusting for the good of others is in their own long term benefit as well?

These issues hurt my heart and frustrate me to no end–how and why the United States has the highest mortality and infection rates–when I know we can all be so much better than this…..

So, what are you doing to make 2021 better?

Milky Way Nights

Last night I drove out into the desert to take in a sight I have missed for far too long–the Milky Way. Sounds easy right? Just look up – and the stars are right there. But the local light pollution was only allowing the brightest stars to show, and I craved that amazing splash of milk bubbles!

A little back story–I come from a family of campers. We tent camped because we couldn’t afford an RV. But we were also Girl Scouts, and I was so glad to be a part of that wonderful organization which fostered an appreciation of service, stewardship, outdoor life, and of course camping!

Family summers were spent driving up the coast of California and into Oregon. I could probably show you all the places we knew to stop for the best views of the coast and places to explore. But I also know how seriously the whole family took finding the best apple fritters, and glory of glories, dark chocolate covered orange sticks and honeycomb candy (hey, dark chocolate was a true rarity in the 1970s!).

Setting up the tent came first, right after the long road trip getting to a favorite spot. No matter how carefully you smoothed out the ground, the biggest rock always found your back in the wee, beastly cold hours of the morning.

Spending the entire day in a bathing suit, exploring the river, the trees, and the trails helped develop our minds, bodies and mostly imaginations. We gather to make a campfire dinner, talk, laugh, then eat a fair amount of dirt and cinders on those screaming hot marshmallows — it was required!  After scary ghost stories and the last sticky bits of s’mores are consumed, finally it was time for bed.

Never and I mean NEVER does the last pee avoid those cold, dark, after midnight, hurry up, now, I have to go so bad trips to pee!! You’re getting chilled to the bone, possibly lost deep in the woods, and trying desperately not to pee on the boot laces you were too tired to properly tie before leaving said tent…. sigh.

No matter the bathroom challenges, it was always great to be snuggled in a warm sleeping bag while looking out, on a cold night, seeing the same sky as folks did thousands and thousands of years ago–and isn’t that staggeringly amazing to consider?!

So what does this story have to do with the Milky Way and creativity? Well, that was definitely one of the true joys of camping in a tent! You could stick your head out the flap and see a million stars, just waiting to be enjoyed, while encouraging amazement and wonder. And that can be a huge benefit for an artistic, creative soul.

Wonder and amazement allow the mind to dream, to wander, to seek, and find, reject and tweak, combine and disassemble a multitude of ideas never, ever inspired by 4 walls.

So I hope this inspires you to go out, breathe deeply the cold, clean air, and imagine worlds beyond our own, on a clear night, while the night sky winks its Milky Way secrets.

And the 2020 Winner is…..

… 2020 for most Insane. Year. Ever.

And we still have 3 months before we can shut the damn door on 2020, with an ugly nasty election, hurricanes, tropical storms and then a deep cold winter, major flu season and oh yeah, whatever else falls out of the sky!! And it all won’t go away when that old clock strikes the New Year 12. Oh no. But we can hope. We can hope.

And while we strive to successfully cope – or not, eat healthy – or not, exercise daily – or not, with the bizarreness of 2020, I hope we can all agree on one thing–focusing on glass art helps keep our collective sanity!

Whether you are a buyer, seller, collector or admirer, being in the company of vibrant art, inspired creativity, glorious color and bright happy shiny stuff takes you to a good place, a happy place, a place without untruths and vacuous dribble, greedy or selfish behavior…. glass simply allows you be in the moment, enjoying the sheer wonder of its giant beauty encased in a tiny sphere.

Need to hear the sound of angels? Ring the edge of a handblown goblet! Want to get down and dirty? Start a game of handcrafted marbles! Want some real magic in your life? It’s easy –just add glass art!!
