Holiday Shopping–already?? Yep they’re here!
Well, it’s that time again….duh duh duh…..the holidays are back again, along with 27 pounds of newspaper ads for Black Friday sales. And don’t forget all of the round the clock ads on TV to make sure we go into a spending coma after the food coma on Thanksgiving!!
Now, don’t think I’m a Scrooge, but…..I’m not shopping. Gasp! No, really? Yep, it’s true. Having a day to just be still, not think about what needs to be done for work, or what to make for dinner on Friday (thank goodness for leftover turkey and stuffing!) has been better and much more rewarding than saving money on something I really don’t want or need (150″ plasma TV, anyone?)
I want to create memories and experiences with family and friends, not buy random piles of “stuff”. This afternoon I went to a nifty boutique in Sparks, Sierra Style, that is carrying my handmade jewelry and glass art, just to see how things were going and chat with the owner Kim. We ended up having a great time, talking for over an hour! She’s a real sweetheart and has an amazing decorating style.
Each time I’ve gone there it looks better than the last time–you can really sense the passion Kim has for her business, and watch the rapport she develops with her customers. Sure she wants to make money and sell stuff, but the experience of her boutique is far more than just a place to purchase–it’s a place to connect, a place full of positive vibes, a place to find unique handmade items made by local artists and friends, a place to simply enjoy the company of Kim and her sweet shop dog Grace!
While I’m very happy to have made this new business connection, I believe a new friendship is developing also. To me it’s what the holidays should be about–family, connections, new friends and old, sharing experiences that make you smile and simply enjoy life. May your holidays be full!
